This is kinda long and alot of questions are posed... hopefully someone can help me

OK, so I was having a problem with opening files on my computer. I woke up one morning and all my icons were highlighted black. When I would click them a black box would pop up and inside it would say "program to big to fit into memory."

So after much researching and trial and error I was able to get that to go away. I ran prompt C:\\windows\system 32. I then found the file desot.exe and deleted it as I was told that was the virus causing all my problems.

The black boxes are gone and I can now access my files... kinda....

Now when I attempt to open a file a new box comes up and says "What program would you like to use to open your file." It gives me choices such as adobe, notebook, etc... I can also browse or find a file from the web....

Anyway I can return my computer to normal running status? Also, When I was having the "black box" problem I found a way to run my Macafee.. I also ran it after the virus was removed from my computer, however, both times I ran the scan it came back as no virus' found... Anyone know a better virus scanner (free) that I can use that will actually FIND the virus' hidden on my comp???

Thanks for your help in advance!

I dono how you ran the System Lookup Tool, but, If you still have open with Box Popping up for all the Programs or some programs, then download the registry patch from the below link.

http://www.hotlinkfiles.com/files/2759718_hoehq/ExeErrorFix.reg

After downloading, double click it. You will be followed with 2 prompts. Just click YES & YES again. SO that the registry key will be merged in.

Then try opening any applications, It should open with out any errors. Smile...

Hello.

  • Download combofix from here
    Link 1
    Link 2

    1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

    * Tools->Options->Main tab
    * Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

    2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

    Open with Program... HELP CF_download_FF

    Open with Program... HELP CF_download_rename

    3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
    4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
    5. Close any open browsers.
    6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.
  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.
***It's strongly recommended to have the Recovery Console installed before doing any malware removal.***

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will automatically proceed with its scan.

  • The Recovery Console provides a recovery/repair mode should a problem occur during a Combofix run.

    Open with Program... HELP Rcauto10

  • Allow ComboFix to download the Recovery Console.
  • Accept the End-User License Agreement.
  • The Recovery Console will be installed.
  • You will then get this next prompt that asks if you want to continue the malware scan, select yes

    Open with Program... HELP Whatne10

  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

I cant run the combo fix. Every time I try it says "application cannot be executed. The file _____ is infected. Do you want to activate your anitvirus software now?"

Where I left the blank line it will put different files each time I try. Some examples are: combo-fix.exe, rundl32.exe, etc.

Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.
