My dad has a Compaq that is a couple of years old. He never made any back up cd's for XP. So he is now infected with a virus called packed.generic.200 which Norton will not remove and I had tried everything I can find but cannot remove it. So rather than paying Norton another $100 to fix it he decided to reformat it. I am not familar with the restore partion his Compaq has. If I do the restore will XP be there? Do I need to make a back up before the restore? I was affraid if I do a back up now, the back up will just have the virus.

Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

Using the restore partition will bring your computer back to it's factory state, like when you first bought it. So all you data will be loss and you would need to back it up.
