The computer has been behaving oddly and slowly for a long time now. We had to get the hard drive replaced and haven't gotten things like malwarebytes and Spybot reinstalled, though we do have Norton. There are not now nor has there ever been filesharing software on this machine.

My mom prefers to use Internet Explorer a lot, though I always tell her to use FF.

Btw, I forgot to tell this thing to notify me when replies are added to the thread, when i made my first post. How do I tell it to notify me now?

descriptionProblems on my mom's computer EmptyRe: Problems on my mom's computer

more_horiz
I see, well when you make a post on the bottom right there should be some words that say Watch this topic for replies, click it so you can know,

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.

Which log is which?

descriptionProblems on my mom's computer EmptyRe: Problems on my mom's computer

It should say on the bottom but the dds.txt is the one that shows folders and drivers, the attach.txt is the one with all your programs.

I wrote a reply but there was a glitch so I am resending it. The log that you say shows the programs has the text "DO NOT POST THIS LOG" in it. Here is the log you're asking for:

1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:

* Tools->Options->Main tab
* Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".

2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

Problems on my mom's computer CF_download_FF

Problems on my mom's computer CF_download_rename

3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
5. Close any open browsers.
6. We need to disable your local AV (Anti-virus) before running Combofix.

  • See HERE for how to disable your AV.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe.
  • Follow the prompts. NOTE:
  • Allow combofix to run
  • Post C:\combofix.txt back here.

    Note:
    Do not mouse click combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

This being safe mode, neither Norton nor anything else of the sort appear to be running at this time. I will go ahead with the combo-fix thing anyway. I hope this is alright.

descriptionProblems on my mom's computer EmptyRe: Problems on my mom's computer

I see, from what I can see there is no infection present in the computer but lets make sure:

Please use the Internet Explorer browser, and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.

  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

    **Note**

    To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:

  • Close any open programs.
  • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

I suggest you copy these instructions into a notepad file, because we need to use safe mode and you won't have internet access to read from here.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.

  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Ok so i did all that you told me to and the scan started up as per normal and i went away from the computer for ten minutes. when i came back it had the BLUESCREENOFERRORMESSAGE and the white text reading as follows:

STOP:C000007B{bad image}
The application or DLL [i dont know how to do forward slashes so I'll use the normal ones to tell you what it said]: ///?/C:/windows/system32/Sfcfiles.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

I turned the machine off and atempted a reboot in safe mode and no sooner did I choose "safemode" from the menu than it gave me the very same error message.

The computer had its hard drive replaced not too long ago. Does that have anything to do with this?
