Trojan Horse Generic13.ATPH

Our daughter got this virus on our computer while browsing and looking at puzzle sites. She will not be doing that again! (She understands.) This virus (?) causes IE to open up with various advertising sites all on its own. AVG Free 8.5.375 at first reported that it had removed this, but upon reboot it returned and changed names (?). AVG found "Trojan horse Generic13.ATPH" and "Moved to Virus Vault" several times and several reboots. The latest scan found this in "C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe (3144)", "C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe (1244)"; and "C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe (860)". But that was at least 4 or 5 reboots ago (I've been following your post on what to do and have ready before posting), and those locations may have changed or multiplied. The system is using XP Pro SP3.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I found I had to rename the MBAM installer in order to install MBAM. After installation, it would not run MBAM, so I rebooted and then renamed the installed exe and it ran. It prompted me to restart the computer, so I did so immediately. Here are the contents of the MBAM log:

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously; these few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems. As happy as we are to help you, for your sake we would rather not have repeat customers.

1) Please navigate to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer.

Please either enable Automatic Updates under Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates , or get into the habit of checking for Windows updates regularly. I cannot stress enough how important this is.

2) In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

Ad-Aware SE
