antivirus system pro & malwarebytes

XP PC infected with Antivirus System Pro
1) Ran HijackThis scan
2) tried to run Malewarebytes - mbam.exe shows in taskmanager but does not run
3) uninstall of malewarebytes does not run
4) removed manually and reinstalled malewarebytes (4 times before a successful completion of install - hung up on "finishing installation" with bar complete 3 times)
5) opened to run but again mbam.exe in task manager but nothing happens
6) copied malwarebytes file from another PC where it ran onto a flash drive, tried to execute from flash drive - same result - mbam.exe in taskmanager for short period of time ends without running
7) Ran HijackThis scan again - see below

Please download and run this tool.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  
• The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  
• When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Note)
  
• The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  

Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

I can only boot up in 'safe mode"

when I try running combo-fix it gives a "warning" that AVG is running .... as I could not get to the AVG screen to "turn off" I uninstalled - AVG file folder in "program files" is gone, shortcuts removed .... I have rebooted again into safe mode but combo-fix still gives me the warning ....

task manager has no AVG... processes running nor is AVG listed in applications running

ideas?

Okay, boot up in safe mode and run Combofix there, even if it finds AVG as active.

Completely Uninstall AVG software

Download and run avgremover.exe

For 32-Bit, Download: avgremover.exe

It will want to reboot after running, so allow it to do so.
After reboot, see if AVG stops loading now.

Don't worry, Qoobox is the quarantine folder for deleted stuff by Combofix, it's just to make sure we can restore something should Combofix delete something it wasn't supposed to or didn't mean to.

What does it say? it detected a file? does it say where?

It was one of the files it originally picked up in the scan - just gave the name - the default was "deny access" I changed to "delete" and submitted - didn't think ahead to asking since I just added Avira per your note above.

Was wondering what the difference is or where to look it up
