Combo Fix is asking that I disable PC Cillin Virus Protection and Spyware Protection but when I try to do this - the machine give me an error that there is a conflict with another antivirus or security software. When I click OK on that error, another box comes up "unable to read the configuration. Restart your computer and try again. I did this and still get the same error. Should I run Combo-Fix anyway, despite the warnings it's giving me if I don't shut down PC CIllin?

Well, we are stuck. The program launched and I think it's hanging now. It says "the system cannot find message text for message number 0x8 in the message file" Then it tried to create a new system restore point and then repeated the above message before hanging. I can see it's still running but nothing's happened in the text box for 15 minutes or so. Should I continue to wait?

Cancel it and do the following:

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

  • Double-click the launch.exe or cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, just let it cure whatever it finds...
o Now, go to Settings >> Change Settings
o Go to Actions tab >> under Objects section, change the settings to below
    Infected objects - Cure
    Incurable objects - Report
    Suspicious objects - Report
o Don't change any other settings
  • Start the scan again. This time, choose Complete Scan
  • Click the green arrow button at the right, and the scan will start.
  • After the scan finished, click Select all
  • Click on Cure and choose Report incurable (means take no actions.. Don't "move", or "rename" or "delete")
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click File and choose Save report list
  • Save the report to your Desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Post DrWeb.csv in your next reply (Open it as Notepad).. Do NOT reboot the computer yet..

Uggh...the scan ran ALL NIGHT LONG. When I got down this morning it was finished. I clicked on CURE but it only gave me options for MOVE, DELETE or RENAME. There was no REPORT INCURABLE. There were viruses found but it won't let me copy and paste the box here. I can tell you that the word DELETED was in the last column of most of the lines of text. There were some blank and some MOVED but most said DELETED.

Now the bad part - when I went to try to hit FILE and SAVE REPORT anyway - I got the blue screen of death and my laptop rebooted itself. Now I am here typing this to you.

Please note that EVERYTHING I have attempted thus far is in SAFE MODE because nothing will launch in regular mode.

I am distraught. Nothing's worked so far for some reason.

Do you have further suggestions?

Thank you.

Hello.
That blocker.dll is the problem with the lock down on our tools, so lets unlock it.

  • Open HijackThis.
  • When Hijack This opens, click "Open the Misc Tools section"
  • Then select "Delete a file on reboot..."
  • Then find and select this file: C:\windows\system32\blocker.dll
  • Select okay and select yes to reboot.

After reboot, try running Combofix now, it should work.

Well, I launched HijackThis and followed your instructions but blocker.dll was GONE. Not on the list. So, I decided to reboot to regular mode and all signs of the virus are now gone. Do you think I am safe? I am typing to you now in regular mode and all programs, including my PC Cillin protection are up to date and functioning as normal.

Another thing to consider - I had a external hard drive attached through USB on the night my laptop became infected. Should I reconnect it and run a scan on that as well?

Thank you for all your help. I hope I am free of this thing now. OH - by the way - the wallpaper remains with the spyware warning. I assume it's safe to remove that. Please let me know.

Thanks again.

Hello.
As I said, the blocker was the problem on the lock down, but the malware still remains.

Please plug in your external drive, then follow Origins instructions to run Combo-Fix and disable your AV before doing so. Instructions all in origins post.

I plugged in the external drive and disabled PC Cillin. I ran combo-fix and it hung at "Attempting to create a new system restore point"...it just hung there. Do you think I am clean now?

No, I don't think your clean.
Try running Combofix from safe mode, something may have interfered.

Disabled my PC Cillin in regular mode because I cannot access it due to errors I encounter in safe mode. So then I go to safe mode per your instructs and this time, combo-fix tells me I need admin access to run it. I right click and choose 'Run as Admin' and it STILL gives me the same issue while running. It still ran through some checks though. I do not have a combofix.txt in my C drive so I cannot post anything on that.

  • Please download DDS by sUBs to your Desktop (Important!!) from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
  • Double click DDS.scr to run.
  • When complete, two logs will open. Save both of the report to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste DDS.txt back here, I don't need to see attach.txt.
