Hi

On my pc running xp home i have a blue screen with a message saying to disable anti virus and check the disk. It also says STOP: with a series of numbers and letters after it.

I think this is a virus but i cannot get past the blue screen to run anti virus. Using F8 i have gotten to the safe mode page but when i select safe mode or last known good configuration or any other option and hit enter it goes to the blue page again.

any advise on how to get past the blue page or is there a fix i can download to a memory stick which will auto run when i turn on pc as i cannot get past blue page to run programs.

Many thanks

Are you able to get to your desktop at all? Either in safe mode or in normal mode? If so please download HijackThis:

Please download the current version of HijackThis from HERE

  • Double click and run the installer.
  • It will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\hijackthis.exe
  • After installing, you should get the user agreement, press accept and Hijack This will run.
  • Select Do a system scan and save a log file. This will open a notepad file of everything Hijack This found, copy and paste it back here.

Hi Origin

Thank you very much for your reply.

No I cannot get to desktop. On reboot I am at the safe mode page but if I select any option I am directed to blue screen.

I wonder if this is disk damage. I had thought it was a virus but maybe not????

Any program that will autorun? Saw on a site to rename HIJACKTHIS as WINLOG.EXE to get it to run on boot but this did not work.
Our kids were on limewire berfore this happened. I know that you advise is to uninstall P2P but I cannot get access to change.

Thanks for your help.

Hello.
So I take it this machine is completely unbootable? no safe mode or normal mode?

Please download this file: Avira Rescue Disc

  1. Insert a black CD into your CD draw.
  2. Double click the rescuecd.exe file on your Desktop.
  3. Hit the "Burn CD" button and allow it to burn, it shouldn't take too long.
  4. Next, reboot your computer, keep the CD inside the draw.
  5. Your computer should boot from the CD and boot to the Avira rescue disc.
  6. Next, see this guide here: How to use the boot disc
