hmmm...a little help please? confusion....

so i must thank you guys once again for the great help/assistance you have given me already...but this is a bit confusing.

ok so i'm at a buddys house and i'm using his laptop. It's running vista, and i think there is something seriously wrong with it. it takes forever to load, and when we did a virus scan, i couldn't help but to notice this under Local Disk (C:)

1. Windows
   Windows.old
   Windows.000

and as im going through the files, i just see a lot of repetition of files. are they duplicates? well any who i decided to come and ask the experts (GP FTW!)

also, why is it that when i go to "My Pictures" for ex. on the start menu, there isn't anything, but when i go to to "Windows.old or Windows.old.000" there are the pictures?

what did this guy do!? ha, well thanks in advance.

Nothing to do with what we did.
I think this happens when one OS is installed over another without wiping the first OS first. So files get leftbehind, but because they are already present, they get renamed instead.
