Twitter vs Facebook

Post by darkagn on Sun 18 Oct 2009, 9:13 pm

Hi all,

I have been a Facebook user for about a year now, but I have never used Twitter. For work I am developing an interface to allow users to post status updates to Twitter from our site, so I need to know a bit more about it. Does anyone use both? If so, what sorts of things do you post to Twitter that you wouldn't post to Facebook? How do they differ in the way that you use them?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have on the differences between these two social networking sites.

Cheers,
darkagn

I use both. Facebook and Twitter for this forum, and Facebook for personal use. I don't have many friends using Twitter, I also realise that most of the people using Twitter are the ones who like to broadcast things. E.g. News, website/company updates etc. Most of the tweets for personal use I seen are short posts like "going for lunch now, be back later".

Like what certain journalists say, Twitter is like a broadcast medium and not very much of a social network. Facebook on the other hand has more interaction with friends.

Thanks for the input Doc, your post has really helped me to understand the difference between the two.

When you say you use both for this forum, is there any difference between what you post to FB and Twitter? Do you modify the messages to either one or are they identical?

From what you have said, Twitter sounds more like a news feed like an RSS feed. Does GeekPolice have an RSS feed and if so are there more similarities between RSS and Twitter than FB and Twitter?

Thanks again Doc for your time

I post whatever comes up in the Technology News forum to Twitter. And mostly site updates to Facebook, the GeekPolice Facebook page is also for our fans to leave comments behind.

We have RSS feed, but there aren't many subscribers, so we use Twitter to reach out to visitors of this forum or simply people interested in tech news.
